Erik “the Hawk” MacSorley is a legendary seafarer with a reputation for winning women and battles alike. But when he rescues a seemingly plain ‘nursemaid’ from the Irish coast, he’s met with a surprise—Lady Elyne de Burgh, daughter of one of Ireland’s most powerful nobles.
As Erik navigates a dangerous mission for Robert the Bruce, Ellie proves herself anything but meek. Sparks fly, trust is tested, and secrets threaten more than just their growing bond—they could cost them the war.
My Review
This second book in the Highland Guard series introduces us to Erik MacSorley—also known as The Hawk. He’s the group’s seafaring charmer, and when he pulls Ellie from the water, you know things are about to get interesting.
The chemistry between Erik and Ellie is undeniable. Their relationship starts with friction, slowly builds into trust, and eventually lands in love—after a few detours of heartbreak and duty. While I found the pacing dragged a bit in the middle, I’m glad I stuck with it because the ending was a total page-turner.
Ellie is strong and defiant, and Erik is magnetic but more layered than he lets on. Their dynamic kept me hooked, even when the plot got dense with clan names, titles, and politics. I did find myself confused at times with all the lords, earls, and islands, but that’s part of the immersive medieval world Monica McCarty creates.
My only small critique: I missed the Scottish brogue. It would have added texture and voice to an otherwise exciting narrative. That said, the romance and emotional payoff delivered exactly what I needed.
Final Thoughts
The Hawk is adventurous, romantic, and full of heat. If you love historical romances with a strong heroine, a charming rogue, and just enough angst to keep you flipping pages late into the night—add this to your Highland TBR.
