My Review
Oh my!!! You know I drool over Highlanders, and *The Recruit* definitely delivered. Action, emotion, and romance—it had everything I love in this series.
This is Book 6 in the Highland Guard series. While you *could* read it as a standalone, I highly recommend starting from the beginning. There’s so much layered backstory, and honestly—why miss out on the first five sexy, brooding warriors?
Mary is a standout heroine. Widowed, grieving a sister lost to an explosion, and separated from her son—she keeps moving forward with fierce determination. I couldn’t help but admire her strength. She’s the kind of character young girls should look up to: resilient and real.
Kenneth is determined to be one of the elite. After failing the first trial, he pushes himself to earn his spot. Watching his dynamic with Magnus evolve—from rivalry to respect—was a great bonus. And his bond with Mary’s son? Heart-melting.
I wasn’t sure what Monica had planned for Kenneth, but she surprised me—in the best way. This book is as much about emotional growth as it is about steamy romance and Highland politics. The pacing was tight, and the romance felt earned.
Final Thoughts
Monica McCarty has a gift for building tension—both romantic and strategic. *The Recruit* is another excellent installment in a series that never disappoints. If you love fierce heroines, stubborn warriors, and second chances, grab this one and settle in.
