About the Book

Captured and tortured by the French, Christian Severn, Duke of Mercia, survives by vowing to take revenge on his tormentors. But before he can pursue his version of justice, Gillian, Countess of Greendale, reminds him that his young daughter has suffered greatly in his absence and needs him more than anything.

Gillian endured her difficult marriage by maintaining peace at any cost. But Christian’s devotion to his daughter and his unexpected kindness awaken something in her—a hope that a future built on love, not violence, might be possible. As Gilly and Christian navigate their growing bond, the battle for his heart—and hers—has only just begun.

⭐ Character Spotlight: Christian Severn, Duke of Mercia

Meet Christian Severn.
A decorated war hero. A father. A man haunted by loss.

Captured and tortured, Christian returns home a changed man—scarred, physically and emotionally. But beneath his hardened exterior is a fiercely devoted father and a man searching for something he never knew he needed: the power of healing love.

He’s stoic yet vulnerable, protective but emotionally guarded. Watching Christian rediscover his capacity for tenderness—especially with Gillian and his daughter—is what makes this hero unforgettable. Can love help him overcome the darkness of his past?

💌 Mini Review

The Captive is a beautifully written story of resilience, healing, and second chances. Grace Burrowes masterfully balances emotional depth with a tender romance between two wounded souls.

Christian and Gillian’s journey is heartfelt, layered, and impossible to put down. It’s not just a love story—it’s about finding light after darkness. This is everything I adore in historical romance—rich characters, a deeply emotional connection, and a rewarding happily-ever-after.

Book Excerpt

The countess brought Christian’s hand up, holding it against the extraordinary softness of her cheek. Until he’d taken liberties with her in the library, he’d forgotten how wonderfully, startlingly soft a woman’s cheek could be. As soft as sunshine and summer rain, as soft as the quiet of the English countryside.

"Shall we sit?" he asked. Though he knew she might release his hand if they did. Still, he was a widower, and surely she could forgive him some simple human contact.

She let him lead her to a shaded bench near the roses. The morning air was faintly redolent of their perfume. When Christian seated her, the countess kept his damaged hand in hers.

"I was not allowed to garden at Greendale," she said, fingers drifting over his knuckles. "The estate had gardens, but I was forbidden to walk them, dig about in the good English soil, or consult with the gardeners."

"You are free to garden here all you like," Christian replied. "I ask only that you not disturb my mother’s roses."

"They are lovely."

"She was lovely."

As the sunshine warmed his cheek and the gentle sounds of the garden surrounded them, Christian realized he wanted to kiss the lady beside him—not in thanks, not in farewell, but for the sheer pleasure of it.
