What grabs you and keeps you hooked in a book?

My Answer
I’m pretty generous with a new book. I’ll usually give it the first three chapters before deciding whether it’s working for me. But the truth is, I can normally tell by the end of the first chapter whether I’m hooked and ready to settle in for the read.
For me, what grabs me is that first glimpse into the characters—their situation, their lives, and their point of view. I want to feel like I’ve stepped into their story and understand enough to become curious about what happens next.
The first chapter doesn’t have to explain everything. In fact, I don’t want it to. But I do want enough context to know whose story I’m following and where I am in it.
What can lose me quickly is feeling as though I’ve opened the book somewhere in the middle. If I’m immediately backtracking through pages trying to figure out who everyone is, what happened before I arrived, or why something matters, I’m no longer caught up in the story—I’m trying to solve the setup.
That’s different from an author intentionally dropping me into an intriguing moment and slowly revealing what happened. I enjoy that when there are enough clues to follow along. Even something as simple as “six months earlier” or “six months later” lets me know the shift is intentional and I should keep reading.
What keeps me hooked is curiosity. Once I care about the characters and want to know where their story is going, I’m in. I’ll keep turning the pages because I need to know what happens to them.
So while I’ll give a book three chapters, I usually know by the end of chapter one. Give me my footing, give me characters I want to know more about, and give me a reason to turn the page. That’s what hooks me.
