Romance Authors I Miss (and Still Reread)

A Regency-era couple holding hands at sunset in front of a grand estate, with the caption 'Celebrating the voices that once swept us away—and still do.'

Craving a brooding duke, a secret identity, or a windswept romance—only to realize your favorite author hasn’t released a book in years? I’ve been there.

This post is a little love letter to the historical romance authors whose stories I fell for—and whose words I still miss.

Whether they’ve paused, stepped back, or simply left us wanting more, these authors left a mark on my shelves and my heart. And maybe yours too.

Historical Romance Voices I Still Hope to Hear From

Tessa Dare: Tessa’s witty, feminist Regency romances made her a favorite among historical fans. The Duchess Deal is still one of the most reread titles on my shelf. She announced a delay on The Bride Bet and other projects due to health, and there’s no recent update. Still, her readers wait with hope and love.

Jennifer McQuiston: Jennifer's Victorian-era romances were charming and layered, blending history with heart. Diary of an Accidental Wallflower was a favorite of mine. She hasn’t released new fiction recently, but I still reread her backlist with appreciation—and hope.

Leigh LaValle: Her Notorious Harts series was short but unforgettable. Leigh wrote with lyrical beauty and a simmering sensuality that made every chapter feel like a secret. Fans still hope she’ll pick up the pen again.

“Some authors never leave your shelf—even when they stop writing.”

Monica McCarty: Her Highland Guard series was full of loyalty, danger, and passionate warriors. It was historical romance at its most cinematic. Monica hasn’t published new romance recently—but she hasn’t ruled it out either.

Gaelen Foley: A beloved voice in Regency romance, Gaelen’s last adult historical novel, Duke of Shadows, was released in 2019. Since then, she’s focused on writing for younger readers under the pen name E.G. Foley. Though she hasn’t returned to adult romance, her sweeping stories continue to capture hearts.
