This Week’s Prompt:
Are you good at guessing plot twists?
(submitted by Snapdragon @ Snapdragon Alcove)
My Answer:
I’d like to think I’m pretty good at spotting a plot twist—but only when I’m not too wrapped up in the story. If a book completely pulls me in, logic goes out the window and I’m just along for the ride, gasping at every reveal like it’s the first time anyone’s ever used misdirection. It’s one of the reasons I love reading romance and romantic suspense—there’s always an emotional twist even when I see the practical one coming.
There are times when I catch myself whispering, “Oh, I bet *that’s* the secret,” and sure enough, I’m right. Other times, a well-placed red herring or a carefully crafted unreliable narrator will send me straight down the wrong path. And honestly? I love that. When an author surprises me fairly—without breaking the story’s internal logic—it’s one of my favorite reader moments.
Some authors have me second-guessing everything from the first chapter. *Nora Roberts* can throw a twist that feels inevitable only after you’ve read it, while *Colleen Hoover* has made me pause mid-page more than once thinking, “Wait—what just happened?” But the best twists, for me, are emotional ones: when a character grows, forgives, or sees someone differently, and *that* changes the ending more than any secret identity ever could.
So am I good at guessing plot twists? Maybe. But deep down, I’d rather be caught off guard. Sometimes the fun of reading is letting the author outsmart you just a little.
