Every time I picked it back up, I immediately settled back into Tilda and Hadrian's world, a testament to how engaging both the mystery and the characters have become.

My Review
Returning to a complicated mystery after several interruptions can make it difficult to reconnect with the characters or remember every clue. That wasn’t a problem here. Each time I picked the book back up, I quickly found my way into Tilda and Hadrian’s investigation again. Their partnership has become the steady center of this series, and their familiarity with one another helps hold the story together even as the mystery expands in several directions.
This time, Tilda accepts an assignment from Inspector William Maxwell that requires her to pose as his wife while investigating suspicious activity connected to a burial club. Hadrian is not included in the original plan, and being pushed aside as Tilda’s partner does not sit well with him. Naturally, he finds a way to insert himself into the investigation by adopting a disguise and presenting himself as Tilda’s brother.

I enjoyed the change in their usual working arrangement because it forces both characters to recognize how much they rely on one another. Tilda is perfectly capable of investigating without Hadrian, but his absence is noticeable to her. Hadrian’s reaction is even more revealing. His jealousy toward Maxwell is present without becoming exaggerated or turning the story into an unnecessary love triangle. Instead, it exposes feelings Hadrian can no longer easily dismiss.
The burial club investigation gives the story an interesting historical foundation. What begins as a possible case of fraud grows darker when murder enters the picture, leaving Tilda, Hadrian, and Maxwell with a long list of people who may be hiding something. The case is complicated enough to keep the answer from feeling obvious, but the clues still come together in a satisfying way.
Hadrian’s unusual ability to glimpse memories continues to set these mysteries apart from a more traditional Victorian detective series. His gift can provide vital pieces of information, yet it never makes solving the crime too easy. He must still interpret what he sees, determine how it fits with the evidence, and conceal the truth about his ability from people who may not understand it. That tension is particularly strong with an experienced police inspector closely watching the investigation.
Tilda remains intelligent, independent, and determined to build a life on her own terms. I admire that she is never reduced to simply being Hadrian’s romantic interest. She is an investigator first, and her instincts and persistence are essential to the case. At the same time, her refusal to fully consider a future with Hadrian is beginning to feel like the emotional mystery the series still needs to solve.
Readers hoping for a traditional historical romance should know that the relationship develops very slowly. The mystery remains the primary focus, with the romance unfolding through concern, trust, jealousy, and quiet moments of recognition rather than grand declarations. I would love to see Tilda and Hadrian make more progress, but I also appreciate that their connection has been allowed to grow naturally over several books.
Even though my own reading pace was unusually slow, the book itself did not feel difficult to read. Darcy Burke creates a strong sense of place, fills the investigation with believable complications, and continues to deepen the partnership at the heart of the series. By the end, I was once again invested in both the resolution of the crime and what might finally happen between Tilda and Hadrian.
The Characters
Matilda “Tilda” Wren: Independent, observant, and determined, Tilda continues to prove herself as a capable private investigator. I appreciate that she trusts her own judgment and refuses to allow social expectations to define her future.
Hadrian Becket, Earl of Ravenhurst: Hadrian remains my favorite character in the series. His supernatural gift adds a unique layer to each investigation, while his loyalty to Tilda—and his growing inability to hide his feelings for her—adds the emotional depth.
Inspector William Maxwell: Maxwell is a strong addition to this mystery. His presence changes the familiar dynamic without overshadowing Tilda and Hadrian, and his interest in Tilda gives Hadrian a needed push toward acknowledging his own emotions.
