My Answer
I’m usually a slower reader because I like to take my time with a story and really get to know the characters. Most books take me about a week to finish, depending on how busy life is and how quickly the story pulls me in.
The fastest I've ever finished a book was Our Perfect Storm by Carley Fortune. I couldn't put it down and finished it in a single day because I just had to know how the story ended.
The slowest I've finished recently was A Whisper in the Shadows by Darcy Burke. It took me almost six weeks to finish its 374 pages—not because I wasn't enjoying it, but because life kept getting in the way. I had to keep setting it aside and picking it back up whenever I had the time to really settle in and read.
I think that's a good reminder that there's no "right" speed when it comes to reading. Some stories sweep us away in a day, while others patiently wait for us to come back. Either way, what matters most is enjoying the journey.

You are so right that there is no “right” amount of time to finish a book. There are compelling books that make me want to read fast, and amazing books that I just want to savor. And yes, then there is life that throws its own needs into the mix.
ReplyDeleteYeaah, you're definitely right that there's no correct answer here. A lot of the danmei I read (Chinese gay romance novels) are books I can just read in one go in 1-1.5 hours, and that's very enjoyable -- but a similar length non-fiction or a classic need more time to sit, usually. Best to let the book and how you feel dictate the pace, as you say!

I like to read every word and understand what is going on before moving on. I take about 3 days for books around 300 pages.
