Book Blogger Hop: My Biggest Pet Peeve About the Book Community

The book community is wonderful... but one thing still bothers me.

Happy Friday! It’s time for another Book Blogger Hop hosted by Coffee Addicted Writer! Each week, we all answer the same bookish question and then hop around to see everyone’s responses.

This week's Book Blogger Hop question made me stop and think. The book community is filled with wonderful people who love sharing books, recommendations, and reviews, but every now and then something comes along that makes me wish we were just a little kinder to one another.

Book Blogger Hop Question

What’s your biggest pet peeve about the book community?

My Answer

My biggest pet peeve is probably book shaming or making readers feel like their reading choices are not good enough.

Reading should be personal. Some readers love literary fiction, some love romance, some love thrillers, some love cozy mysteries, and some just want something light and comforting at the end of a long day. I do not think there should be one “right” way to be a reader.

I especially dislike when certain genres are treated as less serious or less worthy. A book does not have to be heavy or complicated to matter. Sometimes the book that brings someone comfort, joy, or escape is exactly the book they needed.

That does not mean everyone has to enjoy the same books. We all have different tastes, and honest opinions are part of what makes the book community interesting. But there is a big difference between saying a book was not for you and making someone else feel bad for loving it.

For me, the best part of the book community is discovering how differently we all read. I love seeing people get excited about books, even when those books are not necessarily ones I would pick up myself.

Thankfully, I think the positive far outweighs the negative. I've discovered so many wonderful books, met incredible bloggers, and found recommendations I never would have picked up on my own. That's exactly why I enjoy participating in the Book Blogger Hop each week.

So my answer is simple: let people read what they love. There is room for all kinds of readers and all kinds of books.

Books, Bites & Cozy Nights: Every week I share book recommendations, cozy reading inspiration, delicious recipes, and a few of my favorite things that make reading life even cozier.
