How much do online reviews shape what you pick up next?

My Answer
I’d say online reviews have very little influence on what I pick up next. If a book has already caught my attention, I might glance briefly at the reviews, but sometimes I don’t look at them at all.
Part of that is because I like going into a book without knowing too much. Reviews can sometimes reveal more than I really want to know, even when the reviewer doesn’t necessarily mean to spoil anything.
Once I know something is coming, I find myself waiting for it instead of simply letting the story unfold. That can change the whole reading experience for me.
Reviews can still be helpful, especially if I’m on the fence about a book. I may skim a few to get an overall feel for what readers thought, but I usually avoid digging too deeply into the details.
I also enjoy reading other bloggers’ thoughts about books, but that’s a little different from deliberately searching through reviews before deciding whether I want to read something. Sometimes I’m more interested in the discussion after I’ve already read the book and formed my own opinion.
Ultimately, the synopsis, author, genre, and whether the story sounds like something I’d enjoy have much more influence on me than online reviews. I’d rather discover the story for myself and decide how I feel about it as I’m reading.

I get a general idea as to what people are enjoying via their posts on Instagram. If it looks like something I would be interested in then I will investigate further. I will only read a book if I like the sound of the blurb. There are lots of popular books that I haven't read because they just don't interest me.

DeleteInteresting! I actually often prefer spoilers, because sometimes if I get too wound up with anticipation, I can't keep reading. I sometimes wish more reviews had spoilers... It's an anxiety thing, maybe.

DeleteI usually won't read reviews for a book I really want to read for the same reasons. But if I am on the fence about a book I will read the review. Usually to get an idea of what I'd be getting into. I likely wouldn't pick it up right away if I bought it right away and my memory is getting pretty bad these days with reading so much! Lol. I might not remember something "spoilery" if I did happen to see anything!

DeleteThat makes sense regarding the possibility of an expectation changing the experience. It’s why I try to write “no spoiler” reviews. But many do like to include teasers. Like you, I find reviews especially helpful when I’m on the fence about a book.
