If you could recommend one overlooked book, what would it be and why?

My Answer
This question feels a little similar to one we answered recently about books that deserve more love, so this time I wanted to approach it differently. Instead of choosing a newer hidden gem, I started thinking about older books that have stayed with me long after I read them.
My choice is The Ocean Between Us by Susan Wiggs.
Susan Wiggs certainly isn’t an overlooked author, but this is one of her older books that I don’t hear talked about nearly as much anymore. And yet, more than twenty years after it was published, I still remember the heart of the story.
What stayed with me is that this isn’t simply a story about falling in love. It looks at what happens to a marriage after years of building a life together—when careers, children, responsibilities, and sacrifices begin to take up so much space that somewhere along the way, a woman realizes she may have lost part of herself.
Grace Bennett has spent years supporting her husband’s Navy career and raising their family. As her children grow older and her life begins to shift, she starts questioning what she wants for herself and what that means for her marriage.
That’s what made this story memorable to me. It explores love after the happily-ever-after, when two people have history together and the question becomes whether they can find their way back to each other while still allowing room for each person to grow.
I think books like this can easily become overlooked simply because publishing moves so quickly. There is always another new release, another new author, and another book everyone is talking about. Meanwhile, some wonderful older stories quietly move farther and farther into the backlist.
For me, an overlooked book doesn’t have to be one nobody has ever heard of. Sometimes it’s simply a story that deserves to be brought back into the conversation.
The Ocean Between Us is one of those books for me. If a story can stay in your memory for more than twenty years, I think that says something about the impression it left behind.
