Forever Book Lover is thrilled to welcome back New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Catherine Bybee. Catherine stopped by to chat about one of the most debated reader questions: Do you prefer stand-alone books or series? She has thoughts—and we’re here for them.
Stands Alone Books vs. Series Books by Catherine Bybee
What I love about writing series books is exactly what keeps me coming back to them—character continuity. I’m a voyeur at heart and love seeing how past characters grow after the final page. In Not Quite Enough, readers will revisit Jack and Jessie from Not Quite Dating, watching how they’re growing as a couple and parenting Danny through real-life challenges. It’s deeply satisfying to revisit characters and see how life continues to unfold for them.
Another thrill with series is that long arc of development. A hero or heroine might not step into the spotlight until book three, but their journey started way back in book one. You can build layers, create generational connections, and grow a world full of emotional depth. That’s why I love writing series.
That said, I totally get the appeal of stand-alone books. Not every reader wants to commit to a series, and sometimes you just want a one-and-done story that leaves you satisfied. I plan to write more stand-alones too, because variety is what keeps writing fun—and keeps readers coming back.

But I also love reading stand alone stories. Its easier to find a good story with stand alones. I think.
Each author has their own strengths and weaknesses.
