We’ve all been there—staring at a stack of books but not feeling like picking up a single one.
A reading slump can sneak in anytime, even when you have the best intentions. I’ve had seasons where I was so excited about my TBR list, only to find myself hopping from book to book and nothing clicked.
This post ties into my November Sunday Series: The Reader — a cozy collection celebrating the joy of reading. You might also enjoy How to Read More in Less Time (Without Losing the Joy), a companion post on building your reading rhythm.
What Causes a Reading Slump?
Reading slumps can show up for so many reasons. Sometimes life is just busy—work deadlines, family events, or even a new TV obsession can eat up the time you normally set aside for reading. Other times, it’s about mood. I’ve had books I was dying to read sit untouched because the timing wasn’t right. Or maybe you just finished an incredible five-star read and nothing else measures up. Even too much choice can be overwhelming—standing in front of an overstuffed TBR can make it hard to pick where to start. Whatever the cause, know this: it’s normal and temporary.
Here are nine practical tips to help you ease back into the joy of reading without turning it into a chore.
1. Revisit a Comfort Read
Sometimes the best cure for a slump is familiarity. Pick up a favorite book or series you already loved and let yourself get swept back into that world. There’s something magical about returning to beloved characters—like a reunion with old friends. Personally, I always keep one cowboy romance or a Jill Shalvis title on standby because they never fail to put me back in a reading mood.
2. Try a Shorter Read
If a 400-page novel feels overwhelming, start smaller. Novellas, short story collections, or even a light holiday romance can break through the “too daunting” feeling of a big TBR pile. Quick reads create a sense of accomplishment—nothing feels better than finishing a book in a single weekend (or afternoon!).
3. Mix Up Your Format
If ebooks aren’t inspiring you right now, try an audiobook while folding laundry or driving. If audiobooks aren’t clicking, switch to print and enjoy the tactile feeling of turning pages. Sometimes I switch to my Kindle because it lets me adjust the font and brightness, which somehow refreshes the experience and tricks my brain out of the rut.
4. Set a Tiny Goal
Commit to just 10 minutes a day or one chapter before bed. When I’m busy with work and family, I often tell myself, “Just 5% of this book tonight.” Nine times out of ten, I end up reading much longer. Little wins build momentum and take the pressure off—you’re reading because you want to, not because it’s on a checklist.
5. Explore a Different Genre
Feeling stuck in fantasy? Grab a contemporary romance. Stalled in thrillers? Try nonfiction, a memoir, or even a cookbook with a great story woven in. Switching genres is like a palate cleanser for your reading brain—it brings back curiosity and helps you see books with fresh eyes.
6. Explore Reading Lists
Sometimes inspiration comes from seeing what others are reading. Browse my Summer Reading List or Fall Favorites for fresh picks. Curated lists take away the decision fatigue and make it easier to just pick one and dive in.
7. Visit Your Library or Local Bookstore
Sometimes you just need a change of scenery. Wandering through the stacks at your library or browsing a local indie bookstore can rekindle that bookish excitement. Let a random book cover catch your eye—those serendipitous finds often become new favorites.

8. Make Reading Social
Join a book club, buddy read with a friend, or chat about books online. Having someone else to share progress with can give you the push to turn the page. Even posting your current read on Instagram can add a little accountability boost (and fellow readers will cheer you on!).
9. Give Yourself Permission to Pause
Sometimes the kindest thing is to admit you need a break. Reading is meant to be joy, not obligation. Step back, watch a show, take a walk—your books will be waiting when you’re ready. When you come back, you’ll appreciate the time even more.
