It’s time for another Book Blogger Hop hosted by Coffee Addicted Writer! Each week, bloggers share their take on a fun, bookish question and hop around to connect with others.
This week’s Book Blogger Hop question is a good one, because it’s really asking: why do you read — for the story, or for the people in it?
This Week’s Prompt:
Are you more of a plot-driven reader or a character-driven reader?
(submitted by Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer)
My Answer:
Honestly? A little of both — but I lean character-driven. That’s probably because of the authors I gravitate toward: romance, women’s fiction, small town… those are all very character-first. I want to care about the people so that whatever happens in the story actually matters.
Here’s a quick way to think about it:
- Character-driven: story moves because of what a person wants, feels, or decides (romance, WF, family dramas, some historicals).
- Plot-driven: story moves because of what happens (mystery, thrillers, suspense, some fantasy).
When I pick up a mystery or romantic suspense, I’m fine with it being more plot-y. But for my everyday reading, I want layered characters, friendships, and emotional payoff. The best books, though, do both — great people + a reason to keep turning pages.

I am more plot driven but there are times that I am more character driven. It just depends on the book. Have a great weekend!
