Book Blogger Hop: Rising Book Prices for Hardcovers, Paperbacks, and eBooks

When did buying a book start feeling like a budget decision?

Welcome back to the Book Blogger Hop hosted by Coffee Addicted Writer!! This week’s question touches on something I think many readers have noticed lately: the rising cost of books.

This week’s Book Blogger Hop question:

What do you think about rising prices for hardcovers, paperbacks, and eBooks?

My Answer

Honestly, I have definitely noticed it — especially with eBooks.

Over the past few years, I have mostly read EPUBs and eBooks, and while I still love the convenience, the prices do not always feel as “budget friendly” as they once did. There was a time when buying the digital version felt like the less expensive option, but now I sometimes look at the price and think, wait… for an eBook?

I understand that authors, publishers, editors, designers, and everyone involved in creating a book should be paid fairly. Books have value, and I never want to dismiss the work that goes into them. But as a reader, the rising prices do make me more selective.

I am much less likely to impulse-buy a book now unless it is an author I already love, a series I am invested in, or a book I know I will want to keep. If the price feels too high, I may wait for a sale, borrow it from the library, use Kindle Unlimited if available, or add it to a wish list for later. Before buying, I often browse my book reviews to see what has stayed memorable enough to recommend.

Hardcovers have always felt like more of a splurge to me, but even paperbacks are starting to feel expensive. And when eBooks are priced close to print copies, it changes how I think about buying them.

So my answer is: I understand why prices rise, but I do think it has changed reader behavior. For me, it has made me more thoughtful about what I buy, when I buy it, and which books feel worth adding to my personal collection.

Books still matter deeply to me — I’m just a little more intentional about how I spend my book budget now.

Have rising book prices changed how you buy books? Are you borrowing more, waiting for sales, or still buying your must-reads right away?

  1. I've noticed ebook prices. Sometimes it is cheaper to buy the book in print! I wait for deals or ask for books for my birthday and Christmas.

    Have a great weekend!

    1. I’ve noticed that too! It always surprises me when the paperback costs less than the eBook. Waiting for sales has definitely become part of my book-buying strategy.
