Book Description
When Pixie Nolan first came to Bramble, Kentucky, the abandoned and desperate young single mother found hope, healing, and a fresh start. With the loving support of her best friends—Marlow Heddings and her handsome Marine husband, Cort—Pixie is now happily raising her toddler son in a cozy cottage, managing Marlow’s thriving boutique, and designing firefly logo t-shirts that are selling like hotcakes. The past is behind her, and life is good.
She never expected to make an electrifying connection with a summer renter, a retired Navy SEAL with his own complicated past . . .
A rugged warrior with scars both seen and unseen, Brogan Rafferty arrives with an adorable baby girl in tow and settles into the lake house next door. And while he’s a stunning addition to the gorgeous scenery, it’s his caring devotion that captures Pixie’s heart—the way he gently snuggles away the precious infant’s cries, or swoops Pixie’s delighted little boy high in the air with his tattooed, muscular arms.
But it’s no coincidence that Brogan has found Pixie, and his startling revelations make it clear she’s the key to healing old regrets and building new dreams. And when a hostile stranger turns up with shocking accusations against Bramble’s new hometown hero, Pixie must put her own fears and heartbreak away for good—and learn what it truly means to trust.
My Review
The Lake House is a tender, emotional small-town romance about healing, trust, and finding the kind of love you never expected but suddenly cannot imagine living without.
Pixie’s story pulled me in because she has already fought so hard to build a safe, steady life for herself and her little boy. She is strong, but not untouched by the past, and that makes her connection with Brogan feel even more meaningful.
Returning to Bramble felt a little like coming home, especially after reading The Guest Cottage by Lori Foster. Seeing Pixie’s growth from where she began in the first book made her journey here even more rewarding and emotional.
Brogan is exactly the kind of Lori Foster hero I love: protective, steady, a little wounded, and quietly tender in the moments that matter most. Watching him with the baby girl in his care — and seeing how naturally he connects with Pixie’s son Andy — added so much heart to the story.
What surprised me most was how much the children shaped the emotional center of the book. Andy and baby Shayna are not simply background characters — they become part of the glue holding these two broken but hopeful people together. Their little bond felt genuine, sweet, and surprisingly emotional at times. Watching the two small families slowly blend together gave the romance an even deeper sense of warmth.
Brogan also carries a quiet heaviness throughout the story. Beneath his strength is grief, responsibility, and the pressure of suddenly becoming everything to a child depending on him. That emotional vulnerability underneath the protective exterior made him especially compelling to me.
One of my favorite lines captures the emotional heart of the story perfectly:
“You’re everything good that I never imagined in my life. I want this life, with you in it.”
That quote says so much about this romance. It is not just about attraction; it is about choosing a life, choosing trust, and believing you are finally allowed to want something good after surviving difficult things.
I also appreciated that the story never relied on over-the-top drama to create emotional stakes. The romance develops naturally through trust, honesty, shared responsibilities, and simply showing up for each other in meaningful ways. The slow-burn pacing made Pixie and Brogan’s relationship feel emotionally earned instead of rushed.
Another thing I loved was the strong sense of found family running throughout the book. Bramble is the kind of small town where people quietly step in when someone needs help, and that emotional safety net gives the story so much warmth. Marlow and Cort continue to be an important part of Pixie’s journey, and the community itself almost feels like another character.
Lori Foster gives Pixie and Brogan a romance that feels warm, hopeful, and deeply satisfying. The Lake House is the kind of story that gently pulls you in and leaves you with that comforting feeling of coming home.

Character Spotlight
Pixie Nolan is the kind of heroine I immediately want to root for. She has already fought hard for peace and stability, and her love for her little boy gives her story a tender, grounded feeling. Her journey seems to be about more than falling in love; it is about learning that accepting help and opening her heart does not make her less strong.
Brogan Rafferty brings that classic Lori Foster hero energy: protective, capable, and carrying more pain than he lets the world see. His care for the baby girl in his arms shows his heart before he ever has to explain himself, and that makes his connection with Pixie feel especially promising.
